Hive active plugs
Switch your sockets on and off with your smartphone.
- Avoiding awkwardly stretching behind the sofa
- People with mobility issues
- Getting use out of inaccessible sockets
- Feeling like a wizard
This clever piece of kit is part of the British Gas ‘smart home’ series. To make it work, you need to have the ‘Hive hub’, which connects everything up to your smartphone. You can buy a hub – you don’t have to be a British Gas customer – or if you already have one, you’re ready to go.
The Hive active plugs can be plugged into your regular wall sockets. Once they’re in, they can be controlled from your smartphone. That means you can turn your lights on when you’re out (confuse potential burglars and your pets), flip on the kettle when you’re nearly home, and a whole host of other wizardly things.

As well as feeling like a magician, and potentially playing practical jokes on your housemates, the active plugs are also great for turning things off and on if you’re not very mobile, struggle with balance or bending. Once it’s set up, you can turn things on and off without having to get down to socket level or stretch down behind the sofa
